The Quiet Chapter: Life Before Song Kang Became the “Son of Netflix”
Long before red carpets, global fan meetings, and the title of “Son of Netflix”, Song Kang was just an ordinary young man navigating a quiet, uncertain youth. Today, he is recognized worldwide for his magnetic screen presence in hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon. But the journey to stardom was anything but a straight line.
Before the fame, Song Kang’s life was shaped by unexpected career ambitions, crippling stage shyness, and a series of choices that nearly steered him down an entirely different path.
1. Blueprints and Furniture: The Architecture Dream
Growing up in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang came from an athletic background—his father was a professional artistic gymnast, instilling in him an early appreciation for physical fitness. Yet, acting was nowhere on his radar.
As a child and teenager, Song Kang’s heart was set on a completely different aesthetic field: architecture and furniture design. Fascinated by interior structures, layouts, and spatial design, he spent hours sketching blueprints and conceptualizing builds. He genuinely assumed his future lay behind a drafting table rather than a camera. However, as he transitioned into late adolescence, he confessed to feeling a sense of drifting uncertainty, admitting that for a long time, he had “no idea where he needed to go” career-wise.
2. The Titanic Spark and Overcoming Stage Shyness
The turning point happened when Song Kang was around 20 years old. While watching the iconic film Titanic, a specific scene featuring Leonardo DiCaprio deeply moved him, planting the first real seed of inspiration to pursue a cinematic career.
Moving into acting meant confronting a massive personal obstacle: extreme introversion and stage fright.
- Family Skepticism: When he first broached the idea of acting, his mother urged him to learn a practical, stable skill instead. His father, however, gave him the green light, telling him to pursue whatever he truly enjoyed.
- The Academy Struggles: Encouraged by his father, Song Kang enrolled in an acting academy. In his early classes, he was so painfully shy that whenever he had to act in front of peers, he would nervously burst into laughter.
- The Drive to Persist: Every time he returned home from class, he questioned whether he was cut out for the profession—yet his underlying determination refused to let him quit.
3. Turning Down the K-Pop Idol Track
As Song Kang honed his craft and eventually enrolled in Konkuk University’s Department of Film Arts (sharing an alma mater with BTS’s Jin), his striking visuals naturally caught the attention of the entertainment industry.
During his college years, he received multiple recruitment offers from various K-pop talent agencies. Industry insiders and variety show scouts frequently noted his classic “idol center” looks. However, Song Kang turned them all down with a remarkably grounded reasoning: “I can’t sing or dance.”
Rather than spreading himself thin across idol training, he chose to focus entirely on acting, determined to build a career as a genuine dramatic actor.
The Breakthrough
Song Kang’s persistence eventually paid off when he made his official acting debut in 2017 as a supporting character in the tvN romantic comedy The Liar and His Lover.
Looking back at the blueprint-sketching, shy teenager who almost gave up during his first acting classes, it’s clear that Song Kang’s quiet resilience was his greatest asset all along. Before he ever stepped onto a K-drama set, he had to construct his confidence from the ground up—proving that his most impressive creation wasn’t a piece of furniture or an architectural design, but his own path to stardom.
