Before the Spotlight: The Pre-Debut Journey of Song Kang

Long before he was crowned the unofficial “Son of Netflix” or setting global hearts aflutter in smash-hit dramas like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a regular young man trying to figure out his place in the world.

While his striking visuals and effortless on-screen charisma make it seem like stardom was his birthright, Song Kang’s pre-debut era was defined by quiet uncertainty, artistic roots, and a deliberate rejection of the typical K-pop idol path.

An Artistic Household and Early Ambitions

Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang grew up in an environment naturally infused with creativity. His father was an artistic gymnast, instilling an early appreciation for physical fitness and discipline, while his mother worked as a piano teacher. Despite this artistic proximity, Song Kang’s early years weren’t a straight line toward the entertainment industry.

As a teenager, he bounced around various career interests. At one point, he felt drawn to the world of architecture, fascinated by structural design. However, like many young adults, he spent a considerable amount of time feeling entirely lost about his future, admitting that he had little idea what he wanted to do with his life or where to even begin.

Resisting the Idol Call

Given his towering 186 cm (6’1″) frame and striking, model-esque features, it came as no surprise that talent scouts took notice early on. During his youth, Song Kang was repeatedly cast by various K-pop and idol agencies.

In a K-pop industry where many aspiring actors test the waters as idol trainees first, Song Kang took a different route. He actively turned down these idol casting offers. His reasoning was refreshingly candid: he knew his limitations. Confessing that he lacked confidence in his singing and dancing abilities, he realized that an idol stage was not where he belonged. More importantly, his heart was set entirely on a different kind of storytelling—acting.

Finding His Footing at Konkuk University

To pursue this newfound passion seriously, Song Kang enrolled in the Department of Film Arts at the prestigious Konkuk University—an alma mater famous for producing top-tier Korean actors.

Stepping into formal acting academies and university classes, however, was initially a humbling and anxiety-inducing experience. Song Kang later shared that during his early training days, he struggled deeply with intense shyness. When asked to act in front of his peers, he would often nervously burst into laughter out of self-consciousness. On the car ride home after classes, he would frequently question himself: “Is this really what I should keep doing?”

Yet, beneath the shyness lay a stubborn resilience. Unwilling to give up on a craft that challenged him, he pushed through the awkwardness, steadily building his confidence, studying cinematic arts, and preparing for the professional world.

The Turning Point: Signing with Namoo Actors

The pivotal moment of his pre-debut journey arrived in December 2016, when he officially signed with Namoo Actors—a renowned management agency home to veteran actors. Finding a stable home provided the launchpad he needed.

Just a few months later, in March 2017, the years of quiet doubt, university training, and overcoming stage fright culminated in his official acting debut as a supporting character in the tvN romantic-comedy series The Liar and His Lover.

From Uncertainty to Stardom

Looking back, Song Kang’s pre-debut chapters reveal a grounded human being rather than an overnight sensation. His journey from a hesitant teenager baffled by his own future to an academy student laughing nervously through acting drills highlights a path built on quiet perseverance.

By trusting his instincts, dodging the pressure to become an idol, and committing entirely to the craft of acting, Song Kang laid a solid foundation—transforming from an ordinary college student into one of Hallyu’s most magnetic leading men.
