How to Add Your Own Songs to Spotify: The Complete Guide

Have you ever recorded a track of your own, downloaded a rare bootleg, or found an unreleased remix that isn’t on streaming services, but you desperately wanted it in your main rotation?

While Spotify hosts millions of tracks, you aren’t restricted only to what’s in their official catalog. Thanks to Spotify’s Local Files feature, you can seamlessly import your own audio files, mix them into your favorite playlists, and even sync them to your phone to listen on the go.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get your personal tracks playing on Spotify.

Step 1: Prep Your Audio Files

Before diving into settings and toggles, you need to ensure your audio files are compatible with Spotify.

  • Supported Formats: Spotify accepts .mp3, .mp4, and .m4p files.
  • The Catch: It does not support video-containing MP4s or certain lossless formats like Apple’s standard M4A format (unless converted). If your files are in FLAC, WAV, or M4A, you may need to convert them to MP3 first using a free audio converter tool.
  • Pro-Tip for Metadata: Make sure your files are properly tagged with the correct Artist Name, Song Title, and Album Artwork using an ID3 tag editor (like Mp3tag or iTunes). This ensures your tracks don’t show up as a wall of confusing, untitled audio files.

Step 2: Enable Local Files on Desktop (Required First Step)

Even if your ultimate goal is to listen to your custom songs on your phone, you must start on a desktop computer (Windows or Mac). The Spotify web player does not support local files, so you will need the desktop application.

  1. Open the Spotify desktop app and click on your Profile Avatar in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
  3. Scroll down until you find the Your Library section.
  4. Toggle Show Local Files to ON.
  5. Once turned on, a new section called Add a source will appear. By default, Spotify looks in your computer’s standard Downloads and Music Library folders. If your songs are somewhere else, click Add a source and select the specific folder containing your music.

Now, head over to your Library tab on the left sidebar. You will see a newly generated playlist titled Local Files. Click into it, and all your imported tracks should be sitting right there.

Step 3: Create a Playlist and Sync to Mobile

To get those tracks onto your phone, you need to bundle them into a playlist. You cannot stream local files directly from mobile storage without first bridging them through a desktop-synced playlist.

  1. Inside your Local Files folder on desktop, select the track(s) you want.
  2. Right-click the track(s), hover over Add to playlist, and either create a New Playlist or add them to an existing one (
