Johannes Pietsch: The Voice Behind the Pop-Opera Phenomenon
Johannes Pietsch, widely known by his stage name JJ, is an Austrian singer and songwriter who took the European music scene by storm. Blending classical precision with modern pop sensibilities, he cemented his place in music history by winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 for Austria.
Early Life and Multicultural Roots
Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, Pietsch comes from a multicultural background, with an Austrian father and a Filipino mother. While he was born in Vienna, he spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
This diverse upbringing heavily shaped his artistic identity. Family karaoke parties introduced him to the vibrant world of pop music, while his father sparked a simultaneous appreciation for classical opera. These two contrasting genres would eventually form the foundation of his signature musical style. In 2016, Pietsch and his family moved back to Vienna, where he began formally pursuing his passion for the arts.
Stepping Into the Spotlight
Before achieving international acclaim, Pietsch built his performance experience through various television contests and elite training institutions:
- The Voice UK (2020): After missing the application deadline for the German edition, Pietsch competed in the ninth series of The Voice UK, advancing to the Knockouts under the mentorship of coach will.i.am.
- Starmania (2021): He returned to television screens in his home country, competing in the fifth season of the Austrian music competition Starmania and reaching the final stages.
- Classical Training: He honed his craft academically, attending the opera school of the Vienna State Opera and later enrolling at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.
Historic Eurovision Victory
Pietsch’s career reached a monumental turning point on January 30, 2025, when national broadcaster ORF announced him as Austria’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Performing the track “Wasted Love”—which he co-wrote alongside Thomas Thurner and former Austrian Eurovision representative Teodora Špirić—Pietsch captivated audiences across the continent.
On May 17, 2025, at the Grand Final, JJ clinched first place with a stellar total of 436 points, dominating the jury vote and pulling strong numbers from the televote. His victory broke multiple records:
- He became the first Eurovision winner of Southeast Asian descent.
- He made history as the first solo Eurovision winner born in the 21st century.
Musical Style and Artistic Identity
As a sopranist (utilizing a soprano-range countertenor technique), Pietsch possesses a remarkable vocal range capable of hitting striking high notes. His music effortlessly bridges the gap between theatrical, dramatic opera vocals and catchy, high-energy pop production.
Fluent in multiple languages—including German, English, and Tagalog—Pietsch continues to expand his artistic footprint, releasing further musical projects and connecting with a massive global fanbase across digital platforms.
