Hailo-8 vs. Hailo-8L: Choosing the Right Edge AI Accelerator
Edge AI has completely transformed what small, low-power devices can do. Whether you are building a smart security camera, an industrial automation hub, or upgrading a hobbyist single-board computer like the Raspberry Pi 5, running neural networks locally—without relying on cloud servers—is the gold standard for speed, privacy, and reliability.
Enter Hailo, a prominent name in specialized AI acceleration. Two of their most popular chips for mainstream edge deployments are the Hailo-8 and the Hailo-8L. While they share the same underlying architecture and software ecosystem, they cater to different performance tiers and budgets.
The Core Difference: Performance and Specs
At a glance, the naming convention tells most of the story:
- Hailo-8: Delivers up to 26 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) of INT8 computing power.
- Hailo-8L: A streamlined, cost-effective sibling delivering up to 13 TOPS (precisely half of its bigger sibling).
Under the hood, the Hailo-8L features roughly half the amount of compute elements found in the full-fat Hailo-8, but the rest of the architecture remains identical. Both chips utilize INT8 precision for standard vision models and run on the same comprehensive Hailo Dataflow Compiler and software toolchain.
